- [On a New Track: Proposed Greenway Could help improve City’s Economy- Charleston Post & Courier](https://tedxcharleston.org/news/on-a-new-track-proposed-greenway-could-help-improve-citys-economy-charleston-post-courier/) - Soon, a 1.5-mile-long strip of land, mostly positioned beneath those viaducts, could be transformed into a greenway, if a new plan is realized. The greenway would provide Lowcountry residents with pedestrian and bike paths that stretch from Mount Pleasant Street to Woolfe Street, along the unused Norfolk Southern railroad tracks. The greenway, tentatively called the Charleston Rail Line Linear Park, would improve property in disuse, but it would do more than that, its advocates say. It would reconnect neighborhoods, beautify the city’s major gateway and help set the stage for improving Charleston’s economic future. Michael Messner, a Lowline board member and equity fund manager, gave a TEDx Talk in Charleston in May in which he laid out a broad vision for a greener city that included the proposed greenway. He estimated that the Lowline project would cost about $10 million, and could be the first phase of a larger effort to improve the urban landscape.

In the upper-income Greensboro, N.C., neighborhood where he grew up, Stanfield explained, most of the capital coursing through was controlled by the citizenry and flowed to “strengths,” such as high-achieving students or institutions. In poorer areas, however, such as the Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood where he now lives and works, most of the money comes from the government and “agencies,” Stanfield said as images and graphics flashed on a screen behind him, and it tends to go to “problems.”

This video playlist was curated by these TEDxCharleston team members: Meg Thompson works in the Business & Neighborhood Services Division of the City of Charleston, where she connects residents and businesses with City services. She is also an active volunteer with organizations such as Reading Partners, YNPN Lowcountry, and the TEDxCharleston Audience & Outreach Committee. Bill Thomas works at the Saint Stephen Plant for Albany International, a global advanced textiles and materials processing company, where he serves as Finishing Department Manager. He enjoys volunteering or participating with the Low country Heart Walk, the Race for the Cure Lowcountry, the Palmetto Project, and most recently, on the TEDxCharleston Outreach Committee.

They’ve selected six videos that speak to this summer’s particular moment in history, addressing topics from nonviolence, speaking out, and taking a stand against drugs and gun violence. This video playlist was curated by these TEDxCharleston team members. Claire Monahan is a freelance web marketing consultant and leads the social media for TEDxCharleston. She previously managed the web presence for Ashley Hall school as well as numerous retail and technology companies. Edith Howle is the curator for TEDxCharleston and has been passionate about new ideas since she was a little girl. After a bicultural childhood and a two-decade career advising the biggest companies in the financial industry, she now spends her time bringing the TED brand of conferences to Charleston. Andrea Schenck is a management consultant and leads Audience and Outreach for TEDxCharleston. Since 1987, when she worked in Japan, Andrea has helped others to be aware of and work with differences. This fall, she is a participant in the Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative.
